What is mental health?

Mental health is just as important as physical health to our overall quality of life. It’s not simply the absence of mental illness—it also means having the skills to cope with life’s challenges. When ignored, mental health issues can interfere with a child’s learning, development, relationships, and physical well-being. While some problems may be more serious than others, all children face challenges that can affect their behavior and academic success.

From childhood through old age, everyone experiences emotions like anger, sadness, frustration, worry, or feeling out of control. This is normal. However, when a person’s thoughts, feelings, or actions become too difficult to manage and begin to interfere with daily life—at school, home, or in relationships, it may be a sign of a mental health concern.

What are the District's mental health objectives?

Increase:

Mental health awareness
Positive climate and culture in school buildings
Adherence to threat assessment protocols
Development of policies that support the whole child

Decrease:

Mental health stigma
Violent, aggressive, and disruptive behavior

We also encourage you to explore resources provided by the Florida Department of Education to help guide conversations with your child about recognizing warning signs in their peers and feeling comfortable discussing their own thoughts and feelings.
