FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Tampa, Fl. (October 29, 2026) – Students and staff at two Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS) received an unforgettable surprise on Wednesday when Superintendent Van Ayres, joined by members of his leadership team and members of the School Board, arrived to honor one principal and one assistant principal with the district’s highest accolades: 2026 Principal of the Year and 2026 Assistant Principal of the Year.

Principal of the Year:

Jeff Cooley, Kenley Elementary School

Since becoming principal of Kenly Elementary School in 2022, Jeff Cooley has led an impressive academic transformation grounded in high-quality instruction and a strong school culture. In 2024-25, Kenly jumped from a C to an A, earning the first A grade in school history, while 100% of students demonstrated learning gains in reading. The school maintained its A rating in 2025-26, improving its overall score by another five percentage points and achieving 100% learning gains in math. Previously an assistant principal at Ippolito and James elementary schools, Cooley is known for being an intentional, strategic leader who creates the conditions for both students and teachers to succeed.

“Jeff is the kind of leader who sets high expectations and then builds the culture and support needed to help everyone reach them,” said Superintendent Van Ayres. “The transformation at Kenly reflects his intentional leadership, his focus on strong instruction, and his belief in what students and teachers can accomplish together. We are incredibly proud to recognize Jeff as our Principal of the Year.”

Assistant Principal of the Year:

Natalie McClain, Mann Middle School

Natalie McClain is a dedicated school leader whose commitment to students, teachers and academic excellence has earned her recognition as Hillsborough County Public Schools’ Assistant Principal of the Year. Through her focus on strong instruction, collaboration and a positive school culture, McClain works to create an environment where students can succeed, and educators feel supported. Her leadership reflects a deep commitment to serving her school community and helping every student reach their full potential.

“Natalie represents what great school leadership is all about. She leads with purpose, supports the people around her, and never loses sight of why we do this work: our students,” said Superintendent Van Ayres. “Her commitment to creating opportunities for students and supporting teachers makes a difference every day, and we are proud to recognize her as our Assistant Principal of the Year.”

Along with year-long recognition here within the district, their names will also be submitted for consideration by the Florida Department of Education for the Assistant Principal and Principal of the Year for the entire state of Florida.
