Promoting the Love of Literacy
Preparing students of all ages to be literate members of society.
Through high quality learning experiences, we prepare each student to acquire, construct and communicate meaning across all academic disciplines.
Hillsborough County Public Schools is committed to implementing a comprehensive literacy approach focused on increasing student achievement. Learning to read, write and communicate is a basic civil right of every child and lays the foundation of life-long learning. Reading provides children with the opportunities that will allow them to pursue desired careers, understand world events, and better understand their own personal connections to the world. Through our district's literacy vision and mission, we invite all of our literacy partners to learn more about what literacy is, what it can and should look like within the classrooms, and how it can be developed and encouraged outside the classroom.
By supporting our virtual book drive for supplemental classroom reading, you can make a difference!

April 19-25, 2020 : National Library Week
The theme for National Library Week 2020, "Find your place at the library," was chosen some time ago, before any of us could imagine the emergence of a global pandemic that would force most libraries to temporarily close their physical spaces. But you can still find your place at the library because libraries are open for business online, providing the virtual services and digital content their communities need more than ever. You can access ebooks, movies, music, video games, virtual storytimes and activities, and so much more — all from the the comfort of your home. May 4-10, 2020: Children's Book Week
Children’s Book Week is the annual celebration of books for young people and the joy of reading. Established in 1919, Children’s Book Week is the longest-running national literacy initiative in the country. Every year, events are held nationwide at schools, libraries, bookstores, homes — wherever young readers and books connect! Learn more: https://everychildareader.net/cbw/about/
April 17, 2020: Poem in Your Pocket
Our schools encourage students to select a poem and carry it with them throughout the day to share with friends and family members. There may be some schools who will do poetry readings or poetry jams. National Poem in Your Pocket Day is observed each April. This day was created to share the joy that poems bring by carrying one in your pocket and sharing it throughout the day with others.
