Alonso High is an IB Candidate School. What does that mean?
In an effort to expand Magnet program access, Alonso High is a candidate school for the IB Diploma Programme, which aims to develop students who have excellent breadth and depth of knowledge – students who flourish physically, intellectually, emotionally and ethically.
Students who apply and are accepted to the Magnet IB Program at Alonso High will have the IB structure and lessons driving their learning process. This builds on the expertise developed in our district’s existing world-class IB Diploma Programme schools—King, Strawberry Crest, Hillsborough and Robinson High. The IB philosophy will only be available for ninth grade beginning in 2020-2021 and will grow to add tenth grade in 2021-22, eleventh grade in 2022-23 and twelfth grade in 2023-24.
The IB Diploma Programme (DP) curriculum consists of six subject groups and the DP core, comprising theory of knowledge, creativity, activity, service and the extended essay.
Through the Diploma Programme curriculum, students reflect on the nature of knowledge, complete independent research and undertake a project that often involves community service.
There is an application process that International Baccalaureate candidate schools must complete in order to become a full-fledged IB World School. This process can take anywhere from one to two years and Alonso High can only use the term IB World School once the application and candidacy periods are approved.
Will there continue to be a non-IB part of the school?
Yes. Alonso High will continue to offer all students the same traditional state curriculum that is currently offered. Students who are within the Alonso High attendance boundary but do not wish to apply for this IB program will still attend Alonso High.
