Sheer joy and surprise spread across the faces of students at Mort Elementary School as they walked onto their campus to discover freshly painted, brightly colored sidewalks covered with shapes, games and inspirational messages.
“When I saw the painted sidewalk – I was surprised, because it looked so cool,” said Mort 2nd Grader, Carson.
“When I painted on the sidewalk, I felt inspired, kind and helpful – because I felt like I was the artist,” said Cameron, a 3rd Grade student at Mort Elementary.
It’s exactly the impactful reaction the Tampa Foundation hoped to have as a newly formed non-profit created to inspire the Tampa Bay community through positive public art.
“Working with Mort Elementary School was the Tampa Foundation’s first community art project,” said Will Shanahan, Chair of the Board for the Tampa Foundation. “We couldn’t have asked for a better reaction and turnout.”
In collaboration with local muralist Cass Womack and neighboring video production studio Diamond View, the Tampa Foundation achieved its mission of bringing people together. Staff, students, parents and community volunteers spent a Saturday lending a hand on the painting project.
“We want everyone to feel proud that they live in a city with character and meaning,” said Tim Moore, Founder of the Tampa Foundation and CEO of Diamond View.
Diamond View also collaborated with the Tampa Foundation to install a 'Dream Big' mural on the side of its building, which was the vision of artist Tes One and carried out by artist duo Vitale Brothers.
“Dream Big means many different things to different people. For the children from Mort Elementary, we hope it serves as a reminder to reach for the stars every day,” said Moore.
The students and staff at Mort Elementary are beaming with pride over their new project that they had a hand in helping to create and are grateful for this outstanding community partnership.
“Thank you, Tampa Foundation and Ms. Cass! The Mort students love the clean, bright, beautiful sidewalk,” said Bridy, a Mort 5th Grader. “Now, we have an attractive sidewalk for the whole community to see!”
According to Shanahan, the Tampa Foundation hopes to work with more schools in the area and inspire students across Hillsborough County. The Tampa Foundation serves the local Tampa Bay community with a specific focus on Hillsborough and Pinellas counties.
