Jake Russell is the principal at Chamberlain High School.
What are the characteristics of a successful principal? First and foremost, you must be a listener. You need to take in information, while also recognizing that you don’t need to solve every problem right at that moment. Especially if you’re coming to a new school, you have to hear everything so you can make informed and effective decisions.
Most importantly, you have to be visible to the students. They want to see you, and they want to know that you’re there for them. What are we here for? If we’re going to make a difference, we must be accountable to that.
Everyone has potential to show growth, and it’s just an amazing thing when you see a kid come from a tough situation and turn around and make it – either across the stage or just passing that class.
