Rebecca Lantzman is a reading coach and fifth grade teacher at Clair-Mel Elementary School.
What I love about working at an Achievement School is that the students are motivated to learn new things. Some of them don’t come with the background knowledge that other school locations do, so they are always excited to hear and learn new information.
When I was growing up, reading was essential to me. My mom was a reader and I remember her reading at the beach and the pool all the time. It was never a question if I was going to read, so exposing the kids to that love of reading and sharing it is important. The more excited I am about reading – they get excited too.
Building connections with the students is crucial in order to see success in the students. Pulling students aside for one-on-one conversations has really helped me learn more about them. I can build off that background and bring it into the class and engage them as much as possible through the texts that we read or the writing prompts they respond to.
I feel that I’m making a difference each day, because I see the growth that the students make from the beginning of the year to the end of the year and then from year-to-year. I see some kids who come in not having a love of school or love of reading, and by the end of the year, you see those kids get that feeling and love. That’s why I do what I do.
It really is the most rewarding job when you see the difference you are making in the lives of kids. They love it when they see and know they are loved and that they are important to you.
I love my job so much and it’s such a rewarding thing to get to work with teachers and kids and share the love of reading every single day.
