Why #WeAchieveTogether: Teacher Emily Harris

May 29, 2019 - Employee Excellence

Emily Harris is a 5th grade math & science teacher at Reddick Elementary School.

It’s my first-year teaching and my first year at this school. I am so lucky to be here with such a good community of people that I get so much support from.

Teaching is something I’ve always wanted to do. I feel that this is the one place in the world where I can help the most, and I love working with these kids and getting to know them. It’s our impact on them that makes me want to show up every day.

We have a lot of really motivated kids here, who have that inner drive and fire within themselves, and it’s amazing to see them grow. For example, in math especially, I’ve seen my students come a long way over the year.

One of the biggest things I try to do with my students is help instill confidence in themselves, because whether or not they get an answer right, I want them to have that confidence to move forward and try again. I want them to know that it’s okay to fail and to try again until you get it.

This job is very rewarding, and I love working at an Achievement School. The other teachers and staff here all have that same mindset for helping our students. There was a lot to build in this first year teaching, and I’m proud of myself for doing it. I’ll definitely be back again next year. For it to be what I always thought it would be – fun and motivating for both me and the students – and getting to see their faces every day, and getting to know them as individuals has just been awesome.

I know my students are going to do great things. I’m excited for them, and I know they are all looking forward to moving to that next level.

I’m sure I’ll be crying my eyes out that last day of school. I’m really going to miss them. They have been an awesome first group of students, and I’ll never forget them.
