The state has directed all school districts in Florida to keep schools closed through the end of the school year due to concerns over the coronavirus. More information is available on our Coronavirus Information page.
The 5th grade ambassadors from McDonald Elementary wanted to make this past holiday season all about giving and spreading cheer and positivity in the community. Teachers and staff talked to students about doing things that make them feel good inside rather than receiving gifts from everyone else at times. Many students were inspired to start a movement within the school to help feed the homeless. With the help and support of Ms. Hessler, Principal and Assistant Principal Ms. Stone the group quickly went to work and created a canned food drive.
Students handed out boxes to teachers, made flyers, and promoted the drive to friends and families. A group of students even got the opportunity to assist staff members to reach out to Metropolitan Ministries and request bins so they had somewhere to donate all of the items.
Their hard work and effort resulted in over 657 lbs of food, including 800 canned foods. With only a short amount of time and few opportunities to gather the donations, it is impressive and inspiring what these students have accomplished. Principal Hessler shares, "I am more than proud of them for the great work they have done."
