Why #WeAchieveTogether: Teacher Kathy Welchons

November 06, 2019 - Employee Excellence

Why #WeAchieveTogether is a weekly blog from our Achievement Schools. It highlights the outstanding work of our staff and the high quality programs that help our students succeed.

Kathy Welchons is a kindergarten teacher at Ippolito Elementary School.

This is my seventh year teaching. When I was 52, I decided to go back to school and teach because I’m passionate about children, them knowing their self-worth and who they are.

This is the first school that I’ve taught at, and I will stay here until I retire. I have all the support I could need to help me be the best teacher I can be.

When my babies come in, they are like a painting and I get to be the first strokes on what’s going to be a masterpiece. I have the privilege of putting the first strokes on that blank canvas. Teaching kindergarten allows me to help students build their confidence and prepare them for moving through educational journey. We always say, “It doesn’t matter where you come from, what matters is where you’re going to.”

My job is to make students think that school is the most wonderful thing in the world, that going to school is a joy and that setting goals is important to plan what we’re going to do and what’s going to happen when you meet that goal.

The learning is going to come, but before that you must build the love, trust and respect with students. Once they feel that, they are going to perform miracles because they’ve been given the resources and they know that you believe in them.

Coming in every morning, my students get three bands to put on their wrists. As they go through the day and are following directions, are focused and on task, using kind words and showing respect to classmates, they can earn more bands. When they have five bands, they can go to the treasure box. Their behavior is on task, because no matter where we are, they know that I can take a band or pass out a band.

If I would have known how amazing teaching was, I would have figured out a way to do this so much earlier than now. I adore my job. I love what I do.
