This year, Sligh Middle Magnet launched the Ron Clark Academy’s House System and has seen impressive results.
The Ron Clark Academy House System is a dynamic, exciting, and proven way to create a positive climate and culture for students and staff. Using the program’s methods to implement processes that build character, relationships and school spirit.
“We heard that Ron Clark Academy’s House Systems program could help us create a powerful school culture for students and staff alike, so we sent a team out to visit and see it for ourselves,” said Daniel Baugh, Assistant Principal at Sligh Middle Magnet. “We were blown away by the techniques that were being used to encourage and inspire not only students but teachers, too.”
Over the summer a team of teachers spent some in-service hours digging in to find out what the best ways were to implement the program while also including the five pillars we have adopted at Sligh Middle Magnet: Positivity, Respect, Innovation, Determination and Excellence.
“We surveyed our students and gave our returning students a chance to pick their own houses,” said Baugh. “For example, if you are in the House of Positivity, that is your thing. You embody that.”
Each House is composed of every child in the school — teachers, faculty, and staff — allowing students to socialize with one another across grades and with positive adult role models beyond just the classroom setting.
Throughout the year, the Houses compete against one another in a variety of competitions by accumulating House points. Individual students can also accumulate points for their House based on behavior and academic success.
Teachers and faculty utilize an app to assign points throughout the day for behavior, academic achievement, positivity, respect, innovation, excellence and anything that they see anywhere on campus or in the classroom.
“Partly due to this new program but also due to the passion and determination of our teachers and staff, we have already seen incredibly positive results across our campus,” said Baugh. “Improvement in student and teacher attendance, improvement in student behavior, a decrease in the number of suspensions and a decrease in behavior trackers. We have seen improvement across the board.”
“I have the greatest job on earth. I am truly blessed. This year has been a year of truly innovative things that have challenged me personally and professionally but the most rewarding year,” Baugh said. “There were years that I questioned if I was making a difference but now, I can say the rewards far outweigh the work we are putting into it.”
