Riverview High School Softball Field Dedicated to Beloved Coach

April 01, 2016 - Points of Pride

In honor of Coach Angela Slater, who recently lost her battle with cancer, Hillsborough County Public Schools approved the naming and dedication of Riverview High School’s softball field to the Slater Family Field.

When Riverview principal, Danielle Shotwell was asked about the renaming of the softball field she shared that she believed Riverview was truly a family affair for Coach Slater, since her own family grew up in the area.  Slater’s three children, Christian, R. J. and Cody are all proud Riverview graduates; her husband Ron Slater is a Science teacher and has served as her Assistant Coach during her entire career.  The Slater Family Field will not only celebrate and honor Mrs. Slater’s eighteen years of dedication to the students of Riverview High School but recognize her family and her athletes’ families. They all poured their hearts and souls into supporting her and her team.

Coach Slater is viewed by many as one of the most respected coaches in the county and the state of Florida. The sentiments of the following testimonies are shared throughout the community and expresses what a dedicated and beloved educator Coach Slater was and how Great Teachers Changes Lives.

Fellow Riverview P.E. Teacher, Lelani Gordon said that Slater, “was a role model to countless young girls throughout her 30 year career [she coached softball for 31 seasons].  There could be no greater justice than to have her name forever on the field that she so loved and nurtured. I am proud and honored to have worked with, and for her, for 18 years, but even more honored to have called her my friend.”

Both Plant coach Melissa Sigmon and Newsome coach Autumn Dunn are a testament to Angela Slater’s mentoring when they played for Mrs. Slater with the Brandon Eagles. "She is one of the main reasons I got into coaching," said Dunn, who guided the Wolves to the Class 8A State Title last season. "She just had such a respect for the game and taught us so much about softball and a lot about life."

Principal Shotwell goes on to say, “Mrs. Slater was a phenomenal educator and coach. She was the only coach in Riverview High School history to win a team State Championship in our 18-year history and earned over 500 career victories during her career.”  Slater turned the softball program into a powerhouse, winning state titles in 2000 and '02 and finishing as the state runner-up in '03.

Both Area 8 Superintendent, Marcos Murillo, and Shotwell agreed that Angela Slater will forever be admired and respected for her unwavering support for students and colleagues; dedication to teaching; her love of softball, and the lessons that the game taught to each and every athlete that played within her program.

Ron and Cody Slater, will finish out the season and coach the Riverview softball team.  Click here to see more on the Slater Family Field dedication and memorial.
