Plant City high school graduate earns Right Fit Foundation scholarship

June 09, 2015 - Student Success

David PeQueen was born in Plant City and attended HCPS his entire K-12 career beginning at Walden Lake Elementary, middle school at Tomlin, and finally Plant City High School (PCHS), where he recently graduated 8th in his class of 436 seniors.  He will be attending Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University beginning in August, where he is planning to major in Astronomy and Astrophysics.

The College and Career Counselor at PCHS, Sherrie Mueller, provided David with the initial information about a scholarship opportunity (the Right Fit Foundation Scholarship) that is now being offered to HCPS students.  David completed his application, and just a few days prior to the PCHS commencement ceremony, and to David and his family’s delight, the Right Fit Foundation announced that David was this year’s recipient of their $5,000 scholarship.

The criteria for applying for a Right Fit Scholarship is very specific; in addition to meeting the basic requirements, which include having a weighted high school GPA of 3.0 or higher, living in Hillsborough or Pasco County, and being a U.S. resident, the family must also meet “middle-income” guidelines.   According to foundation founder Kenneth Albert, "These families often do not qualify for need-based financial aid and borrow more on average to pay for college.  Each year we provide a $5,000 local scholarship to a college bound student in Hillsborough, Pasco or Pinellas County in order to help middle income families with the growing cost of college.”

When asked about how his high school had prepared him for life, David said the three things that immediately came to mind were “the development of a strong work ethic, organizational skills, and people skills.”  He feels his experiences at Plant City High School, especially all of his Advanced Placement coursework, were instrumental in preparing him for future undergraduate coursework and even his ultimate goal of obtaining a PhD.  With assistance from the Right Fit Foundation, and a strong set of skills acquired through his HCPS education, David will be well prepared for his years of postsecondary education.  Congratulations David, and good luck in your next academic challenge!
