Tampa Hosts 2015 AVID Summer Institute

June 29, 2015 - Points of Pride

For the second summer in a row, Tampa hosted the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Summer Institute. The Institute attracted more than 2,000 educators from across the nation, including 460 teachers, counselors, and administrators from Hillsborough County Public Schools.  This year’s theme was “Student Success Starts Here!”

Participants had more than 40 AVID trainings to choose from over the three days of the Institute.  Teams from each school collaborated to create their plans for the 2015-16 school year, including how they will successfully implement AVID in their schools.  Attendees completed e-learning components prior to arriving at the Institute. They worked in interdisciplinary site teams to assess their schools’ needs and created action plans to increase student college readiness and success.

AVID teachers and students focus on developing skills needed to be successful in life after graduation.  They explore options through research, guest speakers, and career and college field trips. The district has 73 AVID sites (all middle and high schools), with implementation to elementary at four sites, including Sulphur Springs, Rampello, Roland Park, and Tinker K-8 campuses, planned for the fall.

More than just another program, AVID is a philosophy that holds students accountable to the highest standards. It enables students to rise to the challenge by providing academic and social support.
