In a first-ever, multi-program graduation ceremony, Learey Technical College celebrated student success in front of a packed house in the Leto High School auditorium. Over 140 students in five programs were recognized by the District and partnering agencies including Superintendent Jeff Eakins, School Board Chair Susan L. Valdes, Principal AnnMarie Courtney, District Chief Jones and Captain Perez of Tampa Fire Rescue, and keynote speaker Phil Jones, President of the Hillsborough Education Foundation.
The five programs represented in the graduation ceremony included Automotive Service Technology, Early Childhood Education (ECE), Electricity, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), and Firefighter I and II. Students in the programs spent anywhere from 40 hours (entry-level ECE) to five months (EMT) to 21 months (Automotive Service Technology) in their program before completion. Students earned varying levels of certifications, and along with state licensing opportunities, many will begin working in their industry immediately upon graduation. Learey Technical College provided more than $79,000 of financial aid for students by accessing resources such as the Community Service Block Grant, the HEF INVEST Grant, the Perkins Grant, the Florida PrePaid program, and VA Benefits.
The family of one of the graduates from the ECE program, Olga Reynolds, could not have been more proud of their wife and mother as she marched across the stage wearing the bright purple Early Childhood Education stole for this important occasion. Her husband Rick, daughter Arianna, and son Juan were all smiles when they posed together for photos after the ceremony. Juan, who will be a junior at Tampa Bay Technical High School in the JROTC program, is especially proud of his mother’s accomplishments. He stated that ,“My mother spent almost two years juggling her full-time job, her children and our schedules, and doing everything she could to balance being a good mom and keeping up with her school work.” Olga’s goal is to earn a Bachelor degree and become a teacher of special needs students, but in the meantime, she is already working in the childcare industry, and she and her family are committed to giving back to the community as thanks for the wonderful family and life that they have.
