Students explore career opportunities at the 2017 Future Fair

April 18, 2017 - Points of Pride

Hillsborough County Public Schools and businesses in the Greater Plant City area participated in the first Future Fair held today. Students from Plant City High School, Durant High School, Simmons Career Center, and Strawberry Crest High School were invited to the HCC Plant City campus at the Trinkle Center. They participated in a robust agenda designed to prepare and connect them to the many job opportunities the Plant City community has to offer.

The opening and closing ceremonies featured School Board Member Melissa Snively, Superintendent Jeff Eakins, and Plant City Mayor Rick Lott.
"The future comes fast," shared Melissa Snively as she challenged students to start thinking about the many options and opportunities they have available now.
Superintendent Jeff Eakins acknowledged and thanked school staff, advocates and businesses for supporting students. "Every student needs a vision for their future in the workforce and we all play a major role in that," said Eakins.
Students spent the first part of the day in the trade show hall with over 50 businesses, including apprenticeship programs and the Armed Forces.
Students also had the opportunity to attend two sessions with dynamic speakers. Keynote speakers Steve and Susan Hurley, owners of Stingray Chevrolet in Plant City, engaged students with their motivating presentation. The Hurleys recently hosted 100 students at their dealership as part of a field trip for Plant City High School students to introduce and expose them to other employers within the community.
"Preparing the workforce of tomorrow is the number one goal of our education system and the business community has to be an active participant and partner," said Mayor Rick Lott.
