Public Policy Changes Might Impact Students

There have been stories in the media recently about House Bill 7069 and the proposed public policy changes that could negatively impact programs for our students. Superintendent Jeff Eakins and the School Board of Hillsborough County recently sent a letter to Governor Rick Scott asking him to consider a veto of HB 7069. To read the letter, click here.

Some of you might be asking how to get involved in this and other issues impacting public schools. One way for families to get involved is to learn more about the Alliance for Public Schools right here in Hillsborough County. The Alliance is an independent organization comprised of parents and other members of our community. In addition to programs for students, the Alliance provides the community with information about existing and proposed education policies at the local, state and federal level. A major concern contained in House Bill 7069 is a mandate that school districts share the current capital outlay dollars we raise through our local millage and use for repair, renovation, and new construction with charter schools without an increase in the current level of funding. This causes districts like Hillsborough, that continue to grow by thousands of students each and every year, to fall further and further behind in repairing and renovating our schools.

Another major concern with this legislation is that it will immediately change the distribution of Title I funds which are used to provide services to our most economically disadvantaged and vulnerable students.
