American Sign Language students connect with visiting performers

December 21, 2017 - Points of Pride

Amber Hernandez and Layne Pullen both study American Sign Language (ASL). Both want to use their ASL skills in future careers. Hernandez, a student at Hillsborough High School, wants to be an interpreter. Layne Pullen, from Strawberry Crest High School, is considing careers as an audiologist or licensed interpreter.

Another thing the girls share: They were both awed by students from the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind (FSDB), who signed and danced during a Dec. 13 showcase at the only district middle school to offer ASL, Young Middle Magnet. Teacher Rhonda Leslie organized the visit from FSDB students, who made the trip from St. Augustine to make new friends and showcase their skills.

Check out the video above.

Young students plan to visit FSDB later this school year.
