Plant City High School students may have found their dream jobs thanks to the Career Academy

January 31, 2018 - Partners in Education

Last week, over 100 Plant City High School (PCHS) students had the opportunity to meet with some of Plant City’s most reputable companies. This field trip was made possible by the collaborative efforts of the PCHS Business Advisory Board, a team of passionate educators, business leaders, government officials and parents who have the best interest of the students at PCHS in the forefront of their minds.

The Plant City Economic Development Corporation played an integral role in coordinating the day’s events, setting up visits to Patterson Companies, Hillsborough Title, Stingray Chevrolet and Highland Packaging Solutions. These companies offer great jobs and benefits to their employees, and the Business Advisory Board wanted to invite PCHS seniors for a chance to make once-in-a-lifetime connections with these companies. It was a chance for students to learn how they can get trained, grow with these companies and potentially be hired after high school.

“The day was a great success, our students have had the opportunity to tour these business, and ask questions and for many of them they may have found their dream, or their goal for the future,” said Susan Sullivan, PCHS principal.

The Career Academy was created as part of PCHS Club Day, as a way to prepare students for their first jobs out of high school. Throughout the year, Career Academy students learn how to prepare resumes, gain best practices for interviews, and learn about businesses in the community.

“Today on the field trip to Patterson Companies I discovered what a broker is. I didn’t know what it was before today. The Career Academy has opened my eyes so much and I am just so thankful for it,” said Khadori Walker, PCHS senior and Career Academy member.

The preparation all leads up to Future Fair Day, which will be held on April 26 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Plant City's Hillsborough Community campus. Future Fair Day is made possible thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Plant City Economic Development Corporation, Plant City Chamber of Commerce, Fryed Egg Productions, Safe & Sound Hillsborough, PCHS Raider Champions, PCHS Business Advisory Board and the PTSA. It is a career expo held for hundreds of Plant City students to learn about and be introduced to businesses throughout the community. Graduating seniors will have the opportunity to make a great impression on area employers, by using the skills they gained throughout the year.
