Why #WeAchieveTogether: Teacher Iladia Watson

December 05, 2018

Iladia Watson is a 3rd grade teacher at James Elementary.

I love the environment we have here at James. This is my first year here, and I decided to come because it was a calling. I knew it was something I needed to do in order to grow as an individual.

I intentionally work at Achievement Schools because of my background. I’m able to relate to the students in terms of the neighborhoods we come from.

It’s important for our students to believe in themselves, because it makes a huge difference in their learning and who they become in the future.

My family and I were homeless at one point in my life, and a lot of students here go through the same thing. I was able to overcome that because of my environment, and my parents and the people who believed in me. I made it to college. I want my students to believe that they can do that too – no matter where they’re from, or what their background is.

Poverty does a number on the brain, and it can really hurt self-esteem. This comes full circle as to why I love working at Achievement Schools: I want to bring them positivity, so they can believe in themselves and move forward despite what their environment is. What people say, what they’ve heard or where they come from doesn’t matter.

I hope they can feel that no matter how challenging any task is, they can achieve it with hard work.

For me, it’s personally getting to know the kids and their parents and creating those relationships. That really makes a difference with the students. This job is hard work in terms of what you must do to make sure students remain focused and on target, but the outcome is so rewarding.

This is Why #WeAchieveTogether.
